A departmental exam is an internal test conducted by a government department for its own employees.
It is mainly used for promotions, confirmation in service, or qualifying for a higher grade or pay scale.
Only serving employees of that department can appear, and the syllabus usually covers office rules and the department’s working.
Some exams are mandatory — failing them can delay promotion or confirmation.
The exam schedule and rules are issued by each department separately.
