A provisional certificate is issued by your university as temporary proof of passing the degree.
It is generally accepted at document verification if your final degree certificate has not been issued yet.
It must clearly show your name, roll number, degree and year of passing.
Most exam bodies also accept it along with all your marksheets.
Collect the original degree certificate as soon as it is issued, since some departments ask for it at joining.
