Dearness allowance is a part of a government employee’s salary that offsets the effect of inflation. It is calculated as a percentage of basic pay. The DA rate is revised periodically by the government based on the cost of living index. When DA crosses a threshold, it is sometimes merged into basic pay. DA applies to central government employees, state government employees and pensioners.
