DA (Dearness Allowance) compensates for inflation and is calculated as a percentage of basic pay, revised periodically with the price index. HRA (House Rent Allowance) compensates for housing costs and depends on the city of posting — metro cities get a higher rate than smaller towns. Both are added to basic pay to make up the gross salary. Employees living in government accommodation do not receive HRA.
