Prelims is the first screening stage — usually objective and often only qualifying, like in UPSC where its marks do not count in the final merit. Mains is the second stage for prelims qualifiers and its marks count towards the final selection. The pattern, syllabus depth and difficulty are higher in mains. After mains come the interview, document verification and medical stages.
