What is the exam pattern of UPSC mains?

UPSC mains has 9 papers in total.
Two qualifying papers — English and an Indian language — are not counted for merit.
The merit papers are one essay paper, four General Studies papers and two optional subject papers.
Together the merit papers carry 1750 marks.
Only candidates who clear prelims are called for mains, and the mains marks decide the interview shortlist.
