UPSC Mains is the written stage after prelims, with nine papers — two qualifying language papers and seven counted for merit.
The merit papers are one essay, four General Studies papers and two papers of one optional subject.
All papers are descriptive in nature.
The qualifying language papers need only minimum marks to pass.
The final ranking is based on mains marks plus interview marks.
