Sports disciplines covered include athletics (men and women), boxing, basketball, cricket (men and women), cue sports, football, volleyball (men and women), hockey, and weightlifting. Each discipline is further divided into specific events and playing positions — for example, athletics includes 100m, 200m, 400m hurdles, long jump, high jump, hammer throw and discus throw; boxing covers weight categories from 47 kg to above 90 kg; cricket lists roles like left-arm spinner, top-order batsman and wicket-keeper positions.

In addition to the educational qualification, candidates must have participated in or achieved the prescribed standards in recognised sports competitions, including the Olympic Games, World Championships / World Cups, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships, National Championships, National Games, All India Inter-University Championships, and National School Games.
